I’m majoring in geography, with a minor in sports science.
I would like to think that I will be working in the field using the GIS (Geographic Information Systems) skills that I am currently studying. I would also hope that I have continued to develop my leadership skills and I am actively involved with Surf Life Saving at a club, community, and/or national level, whether it be as a lifeguard, competitor, and/or young leader nurturing others to reach their potential.
My spare time is limited as I am a competitive swimmer (pool and open water), surf sports competitor and lifeguard (paid and voluntary). I swim 6-7 times a week year round, and over the summer train down at the beach for my surf sports 2-3 evenings a week. I am a member of the Sumner Surf Lifesaving Club and my voluntary work includes being a senior lifeguard on beach patrol, assisting with courses and I am an active member of the SAR Sumner/Taylors squad.
I work part-time as a Lifeguard for Christchurch City Council at one of the local pools to help cover living costs. When I do have down time I like to catch up on sleep, see my mates or hang out with them online.
Sumner has been a great place to grow up in - I love that the beach is just there plus the Port Hill provides a great landscape/playground to surround the village. Sumner has the village feeling and people look out for each other and are interested in what you are doing. I have always felt safe here. I enjoy giving back to the community via my volunteer work at the Sumner SLS club.
Inequality is definitely a challenge NZ faces today. Despite our country's reputation for being fair and for providing opportunities, there is clearly inconsistency in our wealth, education, health, and housing. One example of this is the rent strikes in Auckland that students are holding. These inequalities separate our people and limit the potential of many New Zealanders to be able to contribute to society and fulfil their own potential too. To address this issue many changes would need to be made, which is a difficult thing to do often. Starting with education and healthcare access between ethnicities, then looking at housing shortages in some areas alongside the wage growth not matching the increase in the cost of living. Making these equal and unbiased would be a start to a more inclusive NZ.
I would like to send special thanks to the Redcliffs resident who sponsored this award and the Sumner Ferrymead Foundation who enabled it. I am honoured to have been selected for this award. Your generous support allows me more time to focus on my studies, and a little more time to enjoy my sports/activities without the added pressure of increasing my work hours to cover my course fees. Thanks again for your generosity and support.
