I am currently in year 13 and studying at Marian College in Christchurch. I also have a part time job at the Rebel and Briscoes.
In five years’ time, I would like to be building upon the foundation I’ve created through my rowing and academic study in America. I will have just returned after attending university with a rowing scholarship. Ideally, I envision myself as a well-educated, highly skilled, and competitive rower, ready to take on new challenges and opportunities.
In my spare time, I love staying active and being outdoors. I'm a passionate rower and spend a lot of time training both on the water and at the gym. I also work at Rebel Sports, which is great because it keeps me connected to the latest in sports gear. When I'm not working or training, I enjoy going out with my friends and hanging out at the beach.
Growing up in the Sumner Ferrymead community was a great experience for me. I probably didn’t realise at the time, but one of the things I loved most was the close-knit and supportive atmosphere. Because my Mum was very active in various community activities, (such as running a pre-school music group at the community centre after the earthquakes and the planning of the Estuary Festival and various Art Expos I had the chance to see firsthand how everyone came together to support one another and work towards common goals. Mum also helped organise community clean ups which gave me a sense of pride and connection to the place I call home.
The natural beauty of the area was another highlight. With stunning beaches and beautiful hillsides right at our doorstep, there was always an adventure to be had. Whether it was spending afternoons at the beach, hiking up the hills, or just enjoying the scenic views, the outdoor opportunities were endless.
Growing up in Sumner Ferrymead was a blend of enjoying the natural surroundings, participating in community activities, and experiencing the warmth and camaraderie of the people. It’s a place that will always hold a special place in my heart.
House Prices in New Zealand have increased significantly, making homeownership unaffordable for many especially for young people like me who would want to get onto the property ladder. Studying and paying off a student loan whilst trying to save for a house makes this very difficult.
This impacts people who rent too as rents have also increased, putting financial strain on renters.
I am incredibly honoured and grateful to have received a scholarship to attend an Outward Bound Classic 21 day course. This generous award means the world to me, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Sumner to Ferrymead Foundation for making this possible.
