Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust (the Estuary Trust)

The Estuary Trust coordinates projects that include:

  • Predator control;
  • The restoration and enhancement of seven sites around the Estuary edge where local residents attend monthly working session to plant, weed and mulch;
  • The organisation of annual events including the Farewell to the Godwits, the” Mother of all Clean Ups” and public planting;
  • The preparation of submissions on city and regional proposals which may affect the well-being of the Estuary; and
  • Conducting research on estuarine ecology related topics such as presence of micro plastics, number, and health of shellfish.
  • The $5000 environment community grant will be used to enhance the islands in McCormacks Bay Reserve through invasive weed removal and the planting of native species. This will make the islands more suitable for birds to roost there during high tide.

    Shoreline Youth Trust (Fuse)

    The Shoreline Youth Trust is a non-profit organisation set up over 23 years ago to provide community services for the young people living in the Sumner, Redcliffs, and Mt Pleasant areas of Christchurch, New Zealand. Their mission statement is 'to encourage young people to fully realise their potential.

    Their focus is to develop strength and resilience within our community and to see young people flourish through the building of positive relationships that can provide support and encouragement for young people and their families throughout their formative years.

    The $5000 education community grant will be used to keep the doors open at the youth centre, and to provide youth-based activities and open sessions as funding is becoming more difficult. They will also go towards the leadership development programme and volunteer training costs.

    Sumner Rugby Football Club

    The Sumner Rugby Football Club has teams for all ages. Their junior club is one of the biggest in Christchurch, with teams for boys and girls of all ages. At Senior level they cater to everyone from budding professional players to those who just want a social run-around with their mates.

    Funding is a difficult issue especially when you are trying to provide the best resources & equipment when you have a limited budget. So, the $5000 sports community grant will be used for the development of the game within their Junior Club & the surrounding schools in their catchment area.

    Mt Pleasant Pottery Club

    The Mt Pleasant Pottery strive to foster a creative and inclusive environment, encouraging the exploration and development of craft, technique, and knowledge. MPPG is a daily hub of creative activity for our 100 plus members and the several hundred people learning pottery in the many classes on offer, whether a beginner or experienced. Classes, club day, workshops, exhibitions, and many other events provide an important community and social connection, as well as providing ceramics learning.

    The $5000 Arts & Culture grant will be used to purchase two new wheels, and towards the costs involved with their annual All Classes Exhibition.

    Te Awa Kura Barnett Park Regreening Project

    (Operating under the umbrella of the Redcliffs Residents' Association)

    The Te Awa Kura Barnett Park Regreening Project is a group of volunteers who have a vision of regreening Barnett Park with eco-sourced native plants, planted from the Estuary to the Summit, in areas cleared of invasive species and pests. They weed, trap, source seeds and plant.

    The $10,000 Major Community Grant will be used for a range of activities including:

  • the installation of infrastructure to enable abseiling weeders on the bluffs;
  • to buy equipment for our seed propagation;
  • to buy eco-sourced plants and equipment for planting;
  • to support of the volunteer weeding programme particularly on the valley floor; and
  • to buy equipment for trapping.
